I would like to start off by saying congrats to our new brother, Owen Shaw, for joining the brotherhood! The fraternity has had an adventurous past few weeks. The annual Johnny Appleseed festival was held in downtown Fort Wayne on September 21st and 22nd, put on by an organization that gives back to other nonprofits. A couple of brothers attended the festival to show appreciation for the good cause and by enjoying the tasty food and live music. On September 23rd, our actives were blessed with the opportunity to hear a speech by one of elder brothers, Larry Bott, who joined in the early days of our chapter in 1964. He spoke on what his experiences were as an active, how that impacted his life after college, and the lessons that he continues to learn about what brotherly love truly means.
On September 27th, our brothers put on “SigEp on the Lawn”, which is an evening of outdoor events to get the campus active at our house. Sadly, a storm blew in and forced all of the events inside, but with quick thinking the house was flipped upside-down and sideways to make room for everyone. It was still a blast playing games inside as well as giving the opportunity to pie some of the brothers! With how much event planning is coming from our MD department, they decided to hold an event crash course planning for the chapter. This was wonderful on providing a good understanding of what to expect from events and how to work around certain situations. Those two weeks came to close with an event from Indiana Tech student life, which pitted different organizations against each other for a pizza party. The competition was based on a pony race of two people. We are proud to say that it was a win for SigEp! Joel LaFever, Thomas Heniff, and Nicklaus Cowell were our representatives at this event, and they did an amazing job!
On October 7th, our Balanced Man Steward, Andrea Check, came over to talk to the brothers about her role and the importance of presence on campus. Andrea has been a huge help to our brothers over the years by inspiring them to take on bigger roles in other organizations on campus. I certainly felt invigorated after that talk. On October 11th, Jordan Harbinger, a networking speaker, called in to talk to the chapter about public speaking. It was very insightful to the many brothers who attended to find out what they can improve on.
As far as the what is coming in the future, there is talk of a group of brothers going on a paintball excursion over spring break. Another event is the SWEET 16 event, which is a charity auction and dinner event that we have helped with for quite a few years now. Finally, there will be a Sigma for our new brother at the end of this week! Check out our calendar for more events and remember to follow our Instagram and Facebook pages to learn more about the brotherhood!
